"In 2021, when Border Patrol agents stormed a camp of people waiting to apply for asylum near Del Rio, Texas, photojournalist Paul Ratje captured a moment in time. An aggressive agent on horseback towered over Mirard Joseph, a Haitian man. Carrying bags of food, Joseph attempted to shield himself from the agent’s reins. The photo quickly went viral, internationally."

Over 5,000 people have been killed this year, with rampant kidnappings and widespread internal displacement. Corruption undermines the police and justice system, which is nearly non-functional, leading to human rights violations. Gender-based violence and the exploitation of children by armed groups are rising.

DeExternalizing asylum disproportionately harms Black migrants. Policies that restrict freedom of movement by criminalizing migration force Black migrants to remain in countries that perpetuate systemic racism, leaving them subject to discrimination in asylum processing and without access to services and legal representation.

The Trump Administration is trying to intimidate people into self-deporting in order to avoid their intentionally violent enforcement tactics of arrest, detention, and even deportation to a “third country,” meaning a country other than the person’s country of origin.

The Black LGBTQIA+ Migrants Project (BLMP) builds and center the power of Black LGBTQIA+ migrants to ensure the liberation of all Black people through organizing, base-building, strategic communications, and long-term viability and sustainability.

The Haitian Bridge Alliance (HBA) also known as “The BRIDGE” is a 501(c)(3) grassroots nonprofit community organization that advocates for fair and humane immigration policies and provides migrants and immigrants with humanitarian, legal, and social services, with a particular focus on Black people, the Haitian community, women and girls, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and survivors of torture and other human rights abuses.

Woori Juntos focuses on meeting the needs of and organizing low-income seniors, youth, and families. Our first coalition partner was the Workers Defense Project, an organization that works with low-income immigrants in the Latiné community.
